Scarlet 2012

Current Members Exhibition at Serpentine Gallery
This is the Serpentine’s 6th annual ‘Scarlet’ exhibition.
Opening night was held on June 1, artworks are on display until the end of the month.

This exhibition is about delving into people’s perceptions of sexuality, beauty, love, seduction and lust - concepts that many of us struggle with in today’s world.

Seeing as it is extrememly unlikely that any of you from home will be hoping a plane by then I thought I'd share some of my favorite local artist-friends contributions to the show...

These are the things the artists struggle with."

Art Lifestyle is Powering in LISMORE

My artwork published yet AGAIN!
Mine is the B&W dangerous looking man...

My new love... this little guy seems to have adopted me :)

Now hanging in my studio (the painting, not the man!)

April Road Trip

Clint 'Dundee'

Had a fun intense week with Clint exploring southern Queensland; Brisbane, Glasshouse Mountains, Maleny, Australia Zoo, Sunny Coast, Caloundra Beach, Buderim, Gold Coast, Burleigh Heads…

Niesha

Followed by a totally spur of the moment art exploration trip to Melbourne with Niesha! It was one of those times where I offered to drop her off at the airport & she said, 'Why don’t you come with me?' OK! Mr.Rainbow was left in Clint's very capable care and off I went!

Returned through Sydney and drove back to where I am now in my new warehouse studio at Gallery 33.3 in Lismore, Northern NSW.

New Studio

My first week here was amazing,  there was lots of different artistic events going on, so you can be sure that I took advantage of them all!

Wednesday :: There was an Art Flashmob happening in the town centre, where artists were encouraged to show up & create... Not much of a "mob", but there sure was alot of art & creativity flowing!

Friday :: Found me teaching an art collage workshop for Lismore’s “Art in the Heart” efforts.

The Serpentine Gallery opened another group show titled 'Metamorphosis' that same evening.

Fellow Artists

Saturday :: Gallery 33.3 opened a group show titled

Lismore Mayor, Jenny Dowell

Sunday :: The Serpentine Gallery had its Annual Art Auction at the Pop-Up Gallery in the heart of Lismore on Magellan Street.

What a great re-introduction to Lismore & its thriving arts community!

Where my art is now...

Dragonfly Cafe Exhibition & Closing Night was a success!

Have taken down my Dragonfly exhibition now and am really pleased with how it all went. My intentions for the exhibition were met, none of my artworks have come home with me.

Fourteen paintings have found new homes thanks to Shey's wonderful auctioneering! and all remaining  paintings have been transferred to other Galleries & Cafes;

BeanBank Café & Wine Bar in Ballina

Will be becoming a temporary 'Lismorean' come May 1st,  am renting a shared studio space at Gallery 33.3’s warehouse, there’s even a shop front to put work up in!

Things are look promising.

Have even started a new Art Residency this week, will post photos soon!

DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL

"Murder in the Dark"
Nicole Raward

My first time officially curate-ing a show! Again I really wish all my family & friends in Canada could've been here...

But for all those friends in Australia who may have missed the opening night, “Dark Night of the Soul” is a group exhibition that will be on display at the Serpentine until the 27th of August and I’ll be there every Thursday :D

"The Mirror Within"
Corinne Batt-Rawden

“When you lose faith & question your beliefs, your connection to the Earth – the whole meaning of your life – these are dark times. This is a journey of loneliness, a spiritual crisis. This is the dark night of the soul.

The light at the end of the tunnel is the spiritual maturity you acquire through surviving and the consequent reunion with the Goddess, the Universe and yourself.

“Dark Night of the Soul” bears witness to that journey through a diversity of works.”

"What Lies Beyond the Visible I"

My own personal darkness... "Courants d'Obscurite"

Thankfully the exhibition didn't hold all doom & gloom, we received a fair few peices filled with light, hope & whimsy...

The whimsical display.

The central painting, "Lost in Metaphor"by Tricky was by far my favorite painting of the show.
I received some of the best constructive criticism in regards to this series;

1. When hanging in this fashion it automatically links the artworks together as a series in the viewer's mind... even if they are all by different artists.

2. The two paintings directly adjacent to "Lost in Metaphor" actually detract from the overall display; their colours, their subject matter and the lack of a sense of whimsy in them do not match the other five pieces.

A ray of hope in the darkness... Paintings by Shaun Murphy

And my other favorite! The fish that got away... fading in & out of darkness... one I reckon all the boys will be able to relate to :P

'SCARLET' an Erotic Art Exhibition

Serpentine Community Gallery, Lismore, Northern NSW

The First Salon, www.serpentinearts.org

Attended, helped host, set up and hang the 'Scarlet' Exhibit at the Serpentine Community Art Gallery where I have been volunteering my time this past month or so… Am super stoked to have been a part of this group show, it's the first time I've had a body of work hanging in a gallery!

My 'Wall' in the First Salon

I had really been looking forward to this, afterall what could be a better description of half my work!? "Exploration of the senses…sensual & erotic…"

Front Window Display

It was such a different experience than that first solo show I organised in Sydney 2008, An Afternoon Art Affair... equally fun, just without all the extra stress & financial costs.

Unknown Title & Artist

Opening night went really well; five artworks sold (one of them mine!), the Gallery raised a good number of funds through raffle ticket & drink sales, I got in some pretty amazing conversations & lots of positive feedback for my art, the event AND the Gallery.  There were even a few fun & interactive pieces...

"First Impressions"
Jessica Crawford
Paper Clay, Fibre Rope

"Art School Confidential"
Matt black
Mixed, Interactive Sculpture

We had music, art, street performances and a lot of fun & very fashionable art patrons. It was a night to dress up, so you can believe I went all out!  Hence the 'Scarlet' Expresssions.

If you missed the opening night & live inthe area, the exhibition runs until the 27th of June. I'm there every Thursday!

Really wish all my family & friends in Canada could've been here for it... have posted more photos on Facebook - and YES even if you are not on FB you can still view these pics!
